| The information below
gives directions for travel to the California Delta with Snug Harbor as
the target destination. You may want to look at the
Delta Map
page first, and then come back to this one.
Ferry Routes:
There are two ferries serving Ryer Island, home to Snug Harbor. The
larger ferry is called the "Real McCoy". To reach this ferry, take
Hwy 12 to Rio Vista. Just to the west side of the entrance to
the Rio Vista bridge, take the off ramp that leads you to downtown Rio
Vista (if you go right) or left to the levee road leading you to ferry
ramp. Go north along the west levee road of the Sacramento River
(i.e. Rio Vista side) Go 2 miles to ferry ramp. Ferry runs 24
hours a day, except for noon and 8 PM lunch breaks. Ferry ride is
free and takes 3-4 minutes to reach Ryer Island. While RV's towing
extra vehicles or
boats
can fit on this ferry, we suggest you use the bridge route if you
are arriving at low tide, especially if you have a Motorhome, Trailer or
5th Wheel over 30' long. The ferry ramp is somewhat steep,
especially at low tides, so plan to go around to the bridge if you have a
larger RV. (The Delta tides are listed on
Harbortides.com...put in "Snug
Harbor" and California and you'll see the tide chart for us. Get off
ferry, go right on Ryer Levee road about 4.5 miles to Snug Harbor.
J-Mac
Ferry is the second ferry serving Ryer Island. It is a
smaller cable ferry that goes across Steamboat Slough to Grand Island.
Only smaller RVs, under 30' are suggested for this ferry, and only at
high tides.
Bridge Route:
Ryer Island Bridge: From areas north of the
Delta: Take Jefferson Blvd (Hwy. 84) coming from
Sacramento area south or west into the Delta. Jefferson ends at
Courtland Road. Turn right and follow Courtland road as it travels
west then south to the "Miners Slough" bridge onto Ryer Island.
After you cross bridge, turn LEFT and go about 7.5 miles to Snug
Harbor. We're a mile past the J-Mac ferry.
From areas south or west of the Delta:
Take Hwy 12 to Hwy 160. Go north on Hwy 160. You'll cross a
bridge just after going through Isleton. When you get to Walnut
Grove, DON'T cross bridge there. Instead, continue traveling north
along the 160 levee road, with the Sacramento River on your right.
You'll cross a bridge at Steamboat Slough and another little bridge.
Keep going until you see Courtland bridge, also called the "PaintersVille
Bridge". Don't cross this either. Two streets north of the
Courtland bridge is Courtland Road. Just before Courtland Road there
is a green sign indicating a left turn to go to Jefferson Blvd (Hwy 84).
You'll see the main part of the town of Courtland to your right, across
the water. Turn left onto Courtland Road and follow this as it veers
left to Ryer Island. You'll come up to another bridge. Cross bridge
onto Ryer Island and go left, 7.5 miles to Snug Harbor.
From areas east or southeast of the Delta:
Take Hwy 5 or 99 north to the Walnut Grove exit. Go west on Walnut
Grove Rd. into Walnut Grove. Just north of the Bank building and
Post Office is the Walnut Grove bridge. Cross bridge and go right
on Hwy 160. (You should be on the west side of the Sacramento River
now) Go north along levee road. You'll cross the Steamboat
Slough bridge, another small bridge, and then you'll see the Courtland
bridge or "Paintersville Bridge" on your right. Go past this bridge,
continuing north until until you reach Courtland Road. Just before
Courtland Road is a green sign indicating left turn to Jefferson Blvd
(Hwy84). The main part of the town of Courtland will be on your
right, across the water. Turn left onto Courtland Rd and follow as
it veers left to Ryer Island. Cross bridge onto Ryer Island and go
left, 7.5 miles to Snug Harbor.
From Sacramento: Take Jefferson
Blvd. (Hwy. 84) off Business 80/Frw.50. Go south. Follow
Bridge Route directions above.
From Elk Grove: Go to Hwy.
160 towards Courtland. Cross the Courtland (also called
"PaintersVille")bridge 1 mile south of Courtland. Turn right and go
two streets up to Courtland Road (You should be on the WEST side of the
Sacramento River now). Turn left onto Courtland Road and follow it
to the bridge onto Ryer Island. See Bridge Route above.
From Napa: Go East on Hwy. 12
then North on Hwy. 80 and East again on Hwy 12 to Rio Vista. Just
before crossing the Rio Vista bridge, turn Right. Go left under
bridge. Follow Ferry route directions above. If you are
traveling with a large RV, and its low tides, we'd suggest you use the
bridge route described above instead of the ferry route.
From Marin: Go East on Hwy.
37 to Hwy. 80. Go north on Hwy 80 to Hwy 12. Go East on Hwy 12
to Rio Vista. Just before crossing the Rio Vista bridge, turn Right.
Go left under bridge. Follow Ferry route directions above, or bridge
route, if you have an RV over 30'.
From San Francisco: Go north
on Hwy 80 to Hwy 12 going EAST. Take Hwy 12 east to Rio Vista.
Just before crossing the Rio Vista bridge, turn Right. Go Left under
bridge. Follow Ferry route directions above. Alternate: follow
bridge route
From Stockton: Go north on
Hwy 5 or 99 to Walnut Grove exit. Go west on Walnut Grove Rd to Hwy
160. Go north on 160 almost to Courtland. One mile short of
Courtland, cross the Courtland bridge to the west side of Sacramento
River. Go right two streets to Courtland Road and turn left.
Follow Courtland Rd as is veers left to Ryer Island. Cross bridge
onto Ryer and go left. 7.5 miles to Snug Harbor
From San Jose: Most folks
like to go north on 680, east on 4, take the Antioch bridge or 160 into
the Delta. At 160 and Hwy 12 crossing,
you
can cross into Rio Vista and take the Ferry route, or continue north on
160 and take the bridge route. There's also the 680 to 580 to Vasco
Road, over the hills into Brentwood, then find Hwy 4 and then Hwy160.
But everyone seems to get lost in the Brentwood area, so take the Vasco
Road route only if you know what you're doing!
